According to Expedia’s 2023 Air Travel Hacks Report, Sunday is the ideal day to purchase flight tickets to increase the likelihood of getting the cheapest airfare.
The findings:
In creating the report, Expedia examined data from the Airlines Reporting Corporation’s global airlines sales database and the Official Airline Guide’s global flight data platform.
The Air Travel Hacks Report is based on data from January through August. This information shows that, as found in the past four years, Sunday is the cheapest day to book a flight. However, the difference between booking then as opposed to other days of the week was even larger this year.
When to buy:
Prices average about 15% less on Sundays than they do on Fridays for international flights. For domestic bookings, prices are usually around 5% cheaper than Fridays.
When it comes to the timeframe during which to get the lowest prices, 28 to 35 days prior to your trip is the sweet spot for domestic flights, with average ticket fares that are around 10% cheaper than flights booked within two weeks of departure.
International tickets:
International bookings, however, should be made much sooner. Flight tickets booked six months in advance tend to be about 10% cheaper on average than those booked within two months of departure.
Wondering which day of the week will cost you the least to travel on? Expedia recommends Wednesdays and says the cost of domestic flights averages 15% less on Wednesdays than on Sundays or Mondays. International flights departing on Wednesdays also cost an average of 10% less than Saturday or Sunday flights.
