If you’ve traveled to Washington, D.C., then you know that mambo sauce to natives is what ketchup and mustard are to the rest of us— a staple.

The beloved red-orange sauce primarily paired with chicken will finally be available outside the DMV. In fact, it’s coming to a city near you as one of the most popular brands, Capital City, partnered with KFC.

CEO and co-founder, Arsha Jones, launched the brand in 2011 with her late husband Charles. Arsha was born and raised in D.C., but couldn’t find the sauce in the suburbs. She wanted her family to get a real taste of D.C., so she started her brand of mambo sauce.

10 years later, her special wing sauce will now be in select KFC locations in Dallas, Atlanta, and the nation’s capital.

“KFC has given Capital City a huge opportunity to highlight a culture that many don’t get a chance to experience,” Jones stated. “When visitors think of Washington, D.C., they envision museums, government, and politics— but there’s a huge community just beyond those few blocks that has a rich history filled with styles, music, lingo, and food all our own. We are proud to be able to partner with KFC to share our culture with more people.”

Mambo sauce has been around since the 1950s and is synonymous with Black D.C. food culture.

Black-owned D.C.-area chicken wing restaurants made the sauce popular, and Chinese and Korean restaurants adopted the sauce in the 1970s and 80s, transforming it into what many call sweet and sour today.

For Arsha, she wants to ensure that mambo sauce’s true legacy and taste are preserved for years to come.
