Japan has announced the launch of a digital nomad visa, which will be available beginning in March 2024. The visa will further expand the country’s access to the global workforce. The innovative digital nomad visa offers a great option for foreign nationals interested in spending several months in the nation. Here, visitors can combine remote work with Japan’s cultural experiences and scenery.
This visa will provide a six-month residence status to qualified foreign nationals from visa-exempt countries. The qualifying applicants must work remotely and meet certain income and health insurance requirements. Applicants must also have a minimum yearly salary of JPY 10 million (about USD 68,300) and be registered in a qualifying health insurance plan.
Also, particular accommodation regulations are in place due to the visa’s six-month validity, which is shorter than comparable visas in other nations. In addition to the income and health insurance requirements, the visa does, however, permit family members to accompany the applicant. This is only possible so long as they have private health insurance as well.
Eligibility and Application Process
Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa will welcome visitors from 49 countries and territories. The visa will allow foreign talents and their families to work remotely within Japan without employment in the country. It’s important to note that the applicant’s country must have tax treaties and agreements with Japan that eliminate the need for short-term visas. Unfortunately, it is not possible to renew the visa immediately after it expires (after six months). Individuals can only reapply after leaving Japan for six months.
