Ever since the birth of baby boy Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor, Meghan Markle, has been the topic of conversation among royal family watchers.

Markle, whose official title is Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex after marrying Prince Harry, is the daughter of Doria Ragland, an African American woman from California.

The recent chatter surrounding Markle involved her title as the first woman of color to become a member of the British Royal family, which has amplified these last few weeks especially after controversial comments of the royal’s new son.

Despite the controversy, there are other women who are serving as royals around the world.

Princess Ariana Austin Makonnen Ethiopia

Known widely as a Washington DC fairytale, Ariana Austin is an American writer, arts manager, and philanthropist that became a member of the Ethiopian imperial family through her marriage to Prince Joel Dawit Makonnen, the great-grandson of Emperor Haile Selassie I. 

When Princess Austin met her now-husband in Pearl nightclub, she didn’t know at the time his royalties.

Countess Mary Von Habsburg of Austria

Habsburg, a native of Sudan, is the wife of Ferdinand Leopold Joseph Count von Habsburg of Austria. The couple got married in August 1999, hosting their ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya. 

The couple has three children together; who were all born in Nairobi.

Princess Angela of Liechtenstein

Known as the first European princess of African Descent, Princess Angela of Liechtenstein is the wife of Prince Maximilian of Liechtenstein, the second son of Prince Hans-Adam II.  She was born in Bocas del Toro, Panamá.

Baroness Cecile de Massy of Monaco

Baroness Cécile de Massy, born in the Caribbean country of Guadeloupe, is the fourth wife of Christian Louis, Baron de Massy, the only nephew of the late Prince Rainier of Monaco. 

Baroness is the founder of the organization Ladies Lunch Monte-Carlo whose goal is to benefit children and adolescents.

Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso

Masenate Mohato Seeiso is the queen consort of Lesotho as the wife of King Letsie III of Lesotho. She was the first commoner in modern history to marry into the royal family of Lesotho.

As the Queen of the Kingdom of Lesotho, Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso becomes the Regent whenever the King is absent from the country.

Queen Sylvia Nagginda of Buganda (Uganda)

Nnaabagereka (Queen) Sylvia Nagginda married King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II in a historic ceremony in August 1999.
