When you really think about what Africa has to offer, it’s truly a gem that should be at the top of everyone’s list to settle in for retirement.

From the diverse and welcoming cultures, landscape, including mountains and beaches, to cuisine, you won’t find in anywhere else in the world, Africa has so much to offer.

So, what are the best places to retire? A recent report done by Africa.com reveals the top cities to retire in Africa and why:

Kumasi, Ghana

Known as the “garden city,” Kumasi is dressed in beautiful flowers and exotic plant species that leave visitors in awe.

Of all the things to love about Kumasi, hospitality ranks at the top of the list.

According to Africa.com,  the cost of living is low enough to suit most retirement budgets.  Renting a fully furnished, 900 square-foot apartment costs between $560 and $1280 per month. 

When it comes to entertainment, Kumasi offers a number of museums,  markets, and forest reserves to enjoy.

Grahamstown, South Africa

Art and literature enthusiasts this one is for you.

Grahamstown hosts national arts festival every summer. It is also home to the famous Rhodes university, which is a hub for cultural activity and famous art and literature speakers, according to Africa.com

In terms of living,  the rent for a three-bedroom in an expensive area goes for 10,340 to 12,400 Rands, equivalent to about $706 – $850 a month.  

There are dozens of places to visit from museums, the National English Literary Museum, the Kwantu Elephant Sanctuary, and the Kariega Game Reserve.

Asmara, Eritrea

As one of the safest cities in the world, Eritrea’s capital city is a beautiful place to retire.

The cost of living is low. Rent ranges between $400 and $850 a month.

Italian food is easily found in Asmara and the city has a good choice of good Italian restaurants due to its colonial heritage.

The cool climate combined with the scenery makes Asmara a favorable destination, according to Africa.com

Interesting places to visit in the city include the Biet Ghiorghis Zoo and Park, Martyrs National Park, Medebar Market, and Dorfu Ravine.
