When it comes to a destination where you will get more than what you bargained for, Cleveland, Ohio is a destination that surprises visitors.

It turns out that Cleveland is known for its loyal and optimistic sports fans (despite countless disappointments) and The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This explosive adventure takes even the most dubious on a journey of the music genre’s most remarkable stories; there’s so much to explore that even a long weekend may not be enough.

From its innovative art scene, quirky attractions, and rich Black history, especially as it relates to its importance in the Underground Railroad, Cleveland has a ton of hidden gems that have gone overlooked for far too long. Here are some hidden gems that should be on your Cleveland itinerary.

Cleveland played a vital role in getting enslaved people to escape to freedom. Cleveland was known as “Station Hope,” referring to the last stop before obtaining freedom in Canada.

There’s no better place to explore Cleveland’s vital role than by visiting the Cozad-Bates House. It’s the oldest and only surviving pre-Civil War structure in University Circle. It’s now a museum that pays homage to Cleveland’s connections to the Underground Railroad and anti-slavery activism. The original homeowners and builders were the Cozad family, leading abolitionists in Cleveland.

You know that warm feeling of walking into your grandparents’ or aunt’s kitchen, knowing that your belly will soon be filled with fantastic food that embodies love? That’s what it’s like to pay a visit to the West Side Market Café.

From the moment you walk in, you feel right at home. The menu features hearty breakfast and lunch items that feel like they came from a loved one’s kitchen.

Don’t get too full. The café is located inside the historic West Side Market – one of the country’s largest indoor/outdoor markets. Baked goods, fresh fruit, and treats come at you from every angle in the market. Try to indulge in them all.

Have Breakfast At Betts

Another gem among locals is breakfast, brunch, or lunch at Betts. The restaurant serves classic American dishes but does so in a way that emphasizes freshness and whole foods. What’s excellent about Betts is its location. It’s situated downtown in a trendy dining space that’s fun and inviting.

An Evening In The Flats

After a multi-million dollar makeover, what used to be an area notoriously known for manufacturing, coal, and shipping industries is now one of the most vibrant night scenes in Cleveland. Locals call it The Flats, due to its low-lying typography along the Cuyahoga River, and it has some of the city’s best restaurants, bars, shops, and green space.

One of the best restaurants is JADE Steak & Sushi. It specializes in Asian fusion cuisine and, of course, sushi.

Venture Off To University Circle

University is an adventure in itself. The neighborhood is recognized as one of the most concentrated square miles of arts and culture nationwide. What’s great about University Circle is visitors don’t have to go far to witness what makes the neighborhood amazing. It’s home to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland Orchestra’s iconic Severance Hall, the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (moCa), the Sculpture Center, and more.

Enjoy A Nightcap At The Vault Before Resting At The 9

One of the most convenient and quirky stays in Cleveland is the Metropolitan at the 9. It’s conveniently located in downtown Cleveland, next to the city’s theater district. Guests will easily access bars and lounges, including The Vault – a bank vault turned cocktail bar beneath the Cleveland Trust Rotunda. The 9 is an Autograph Collection property with Marriott.

Fine Dining at Acqua di Luca

Cleveland has no shortage of fine dining thanks, in part, to chefs like Luca Sema.  Acqua di Luca is the chef’s third location in Cleveland in the heart of downtown Cleveland. The Mediterranean menu offers fresh seafood, delicious steaks, an extensive wine and spirit list, and more.
