Glenn talked to Travel Noire about her life in Spain.

Life Before Becoming an Expat

Before we decided to live overseas, our lives were pretty good. We lived in a nice home right near the coast of Northern Florida. Our lives were routine and we were content. Both my husband and I are prior military, so we have lived overseas in the past. We lived in Turkey for 2 years and I have traveled to over 5 different countries. I always tell people that once you travel internationally, it will change you forever. Experiencing different cultures and environments allowed me to think and process things differently, including my outlook on life.

Becoming An Expat In Spain

I decided to become an expat because I knew within myself that I wanted to raise our family abroad. And when my husband decided to retire early from the military, he quickly received a job opportunity here in Spain.

My Life in Spain

My life is amazing here in Spain. I feel safe and at peace. I believe that my mentality about life changed the more integrated we became. The overall energy of Spain is just different from my own country. The cultural differences are what made our family fall in love with Spain.

However, the lack of cultural connections has been a challenge. In other words, not having a consistent connection with other Americans (especially other Black Americans) can sometimes be a little discouraging. It’s important to embrace other cultures, but it’s equally important to stay connected to my own culture as well.

What I have in Spain that I didn’t have in the US

What I like most about Spain is the rich culture as well as the traditions that they hold onto. What I have in Spain is a wider and better opportunity for my family and me to prosper. This is why we decided to create a family YouTube channel highlighting our journey in Spain.

The Book

The title of my book is Spain Through the Eyes of a Black American Woman. I decided to write it because I felt like my perspective could offer both encouragement and knowledge for the people of Spain but also those interested in things like traveling, international living, expat lifestyle, the culture of Spain, etc. It was first published in June 2020.

I have received some feedback back, but not as much as I would like to. However, the feedback is positive. The people of Spain seem to feel that I was fair in my views good and bad and that I did an excellent job in expounding in my inner thoughts.

Encouraging people to live abroad

I am confident that my book will encourage other Black people who want to become expats to simply take that leap of faith! That there is a big, beautiful world outside our comfort zone. And that we fight racism by being positive lights in this dark world. That is what my family and are doing, and it’s all laid out in my book.
