Curaçao is arguably one of the most famous gay-friendly destinations in the world. The island, known for its hospitality, always leaves travelers with good memories from the warm welcome of the locals.
The Curaçao motto is “biba i laga biba” (from Papiamento, the local language), which means ‘live and let live.’
This destination was awarded this title because of its beauty, funky parties, smooth vibe and never-ending beaches— there are 40 across the island.
It is also home to the largest LGBT festival in the region, Curaçao Pride. The first installment was held in 2012, but was suspended in 2020 because of the pandemic.
It returned in 2021, and was bigger and better than ever.
“We are very happy that Curaçao Pride could return this year. We’ve put together a wonderful program that can be found on our website and Facebook page,” said Frank Holtslag, president of the Curaçao Pride Parade in a statement.
“Our aim is always to promote diversity. Everyone is welcome to celebrate with us,” highlights Andre Rojer, Regional Manager for South America at the Curaçao Tourism Office.
The current ban on same-sex marriage has been a topic of discussion on the island for some time. According to a judge, the current impediment is not only unconstitutional, but also goes against the friendly spirit of the Caribbean island. It will only be a matter of time before it is overturned to match the welcoming spirit of Curaçao.
