Thinking about booking a romantic baecation to Bali? Unless you and your boo are married, you may want to think twice, the Indonesian hotspot has been considering making premarital sex illegal.
The Indonesian Government had been planning to bring forward a vote on a new national criminal code that could land participants of consensual extramarital sex in jail for six months — tourists included. Living together outside of wedlock, selling contraceptives to children under 18, women’s rights to an abortion and the ability to criticize the president would also be made illegal.
The new criminal code would have gone into effect as early as next week, however, those who have trips planned in the near future can breathe easy (for now), Indonesian President Joko Widodo has temporarily delayed the ban on consensual sex until the new parliament is inaugurated next month. A debate and vote will resume at that time.
