June 16th marks the birthday of one of hip-hop’s most influential rappers, Tupac Shakur, who had he not been fatally shot in the peak of his music career, would have turned 48 years old.
Tupac was amongst an era of rap music that gave us food for thought. Songs like “Brenda’s Got A Baby,” “Dear Mama,” and “Keep Ya Head Up” made us think about black empowerment, police brutality, political agendas and growing up in the hood.
23 years following his untimely death, Tupac’s impact on music is still being felt around the world. His poetic style and complex, sometimes controversial, lyrics are what keeps fans listening to his music now and for another 23 years. To immortalize the rapper, murals across the globe have popped up in his honor. Here are some of the best.
