State Department Warns Travelers Of Crime And Terrorism In Tourist Countries
If you’re planning to go overseas any time soon it’s important you check the State Department website for new Travel Advisories for France, Belize, and Italy, as well as other countries across the globe.
There’s 81 new advisories on the site, with four “Level 4” for Russia, Central African Republic, Burkina Faso, and Belarus. Level 4 means Americans should not travel to those countries because of “greater likelihood of life-threatening risks.”
As for “Level 3” advisories, there were ten in total. People traveling to Level 3 countries should either “reconsider travel” due to “risks to safety and security.” Some of the countries included in the Level 3 notice are El Salvador, the Cayman Islands, and Colombia.
Among the list of countries under the advisory updates was Italy. Stating there could be potential acts of terrorism at large public events. Including, sporting events, nightclubs, public transportation, and tourist sites. The State Department also mention that the terrorist would be using “less sophisticated methods” such as firearms and vehicles to hurt crowds.
There is also a “moderate rate of crime” in Italy for U.S. citizens, specifically for theft and economic crimes, not so much violent crimes. These types of crimes include not validating metro tickets properly and being fined or buying counterfeit goods.
Italy is also going through a “moderate rate of crime” such as pickpockets and purse snatchers. Not violent crimes. Mostly getting charged with fines and the buying and selling of counterfeit goods.
When traveling to Italy you should keep your eyes open and stay alert around large crowds and tourist traps.
Another country issued with a “Level 2” advisory was France. Similar to Italy, France is also prone to terrorist attacks. Their police and military are always patrolling tourist areas and public places for potential threats. Americans should prepare for random inspections in public places and certain private businesses.
As of late, many parisians have been protesting the recent death of Mahsa Amini, who was brutally beaten by police in Tehran for not wearing her hijab in what was deemed a respectable manner. Once the people started protesting they were met with rubber bullets, water cannons, and tear gas. Demonstrations are expected to continue in France and surrounding countries until justice is served.
Belize has currently been listed as a “Level 2” for the rise in crime. The country has been ridden with armed robberies and sexual assault. Regions such as the south side of Belize City and areas along the country’s borders. Most of the crimes are gang-related and even happen in broad daylight in and around tourist areas
“Local police lack the resources and training to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents,” the agency wrote. “Most crimes remain unresolved and unprosecuted.”
Some travelers fall victim to scams and pickpockets but it can also escalate to violent crimes.
