When we think of travel, we often think of faraway destinations, alluring landscapes, delicious cuisines, and cultural discoveries. But what if I told you that the latest trend in travel has more to do with the journey within ourselves than the one across borders? That’s right; sexual wellness is the buzzword on traveler’s lips.

Our health-related decisions, from fitness regimens to food choices, have always been motivated by a desire for wellbeing. However, sexual wellness remains overlooked as a vital part of our overall health. Recent trends suggest a shift in this perspective, with a growing focus on integrating sexual health into our lifestyle choices, including travel.

Understanding Sexual Wellness

Sexual wellness, according to clinical psychologist and psychosexologist Dr. Karen Gurney, is a journey toward sexual authenticity, freedom, and pleasure. It is more than just a physical act; it entails connection, self-esteem, and acceptance of one’s sexuality. In addition, sexual satisfaction is, in fact, significantly linked to both relationship satisfaction and psychological wellbeing.

However, despite its numerous benefits — from supporting the immune system and improving sleep to building trust and reducing stress — sexuality and sexual wellness remain shrouded in stigma and misunderstanding. As a result, this can make it difficult for individuals to discuss, set goals for, or feel entitled to improve their sex life.

The Current Wave Of Sexual Wellbeing

The pandemic has undoubtedly pushed the modern conversation around sexual wellness into the limelight. With restrictions on physical interactions and increased stress levels, many individuals and couples began exploring new ways to maintain and enhance their sexual health.

According to Vogue, during the first lockdown, beauty website Cult Beauty reported an 850% increase in searches for “sexual wellness.” Now more than ever, people are recognizing the importance of their sexual health. And what’s more? They are willing to invest in it. The travel industry is only one of many that stands to gain from this. Reportedly, the worldwide sexual wellness market is anticipated to grow by $55 billion by 2028.

Sexual Wellness Retreats

Sexual wellness retreats are a relatively new concept that provides people with a safe and inclusive space to explore their sexuality. They can range from DIY getaways to structured programs run by experts that incorporate practices such as coaching and erotic massage with discussions about boundaries, desire, body image, and more.

One of the key benefits of a retreat is simply getting out of your usual environment. Moreover, changing the scenery can help individuals and couples break from their daily routines, reduce stress, and open themselves up to new experiences and connections.
