Right on the intersection of Camberwell New Road and Warner Road is one of the tastiest dessert bars in London, and it just so happens to be black-owned.
Even at one of South London’s busiest intersections, you can’t miss the bright pink letters that read Midnight Munchies.
From brownies, cupcakes, milkshakes, and everything in between, visitors describe it as a place that serves “the best-tasting desserts” with an “amazing and friendly staff.”
Travel Noire caught up with the founders, Melissa and Josephine, who discussed their reactions to becoming one of few black-owned dessert shops in South London.
Travel Noire: What Inspired Midnight Munchies?
Melissa and Josephine: We were inspired by our love for great foods, flavors, and pleasing people’s taste buds! We’re massive foodies! We recreate childhood desserts that once made us feel happy and alive as young kids. We find that people love the memories that we bring back, and we love putting smiles on people’s faces.
TN: How long have you been open?
Melissa and Josephine: We first opened in 2016. We love what we do and it feels more like a hobby than a job!
TN: Tell our readers what you can find in your dessert bar?
Melissa and Josephine: Fun and different twists to your all-time favorite desserts, drinks, and savory snacks! We love inventing and trying things out. We also make celebration cakes and play with designs and great flavors.
TN: What’s your reaction to being one of few black-owned dessert shops in London and the only one in the Camberwell neighborhood?
Melissa and Josephine: Being one of the few black-owned dessert shops in London and in Camberwell is super amazing. We are blessed and it’s only by God’s grace that we are still standing. We are huge advocates for young entrepreneurs, black-owned companies and we always want to offer support and counsel to new businesses.
