What felt like a mild fall has quickly turned into cold weather on the east coast. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac’s latest forecast, we will experience a colder-than-usual winter in most parts of the country.
For some people, cold winter travel is ideal, and for others, escaping to warm destinations in the winter is preferred.
WalletHub, a personal-finance website, recently released its 2022’s Best Winter Holiday Destinations report, which shows the best cold and warm destinations for winter travel in the United States.

How cities were compared
Nearly 70 of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. were compared and grouped by warm and cold weather. The destinations were analyzed based on 37 key metrics, including weather forecasts, activities, safety, and travel expenses to each location.
Saving money on travel this winter
“While this is not financial advice, use a credit card with travel points earned for purchases that can be used for booking travel and lodging. Several different companies offer this and the points can be redeemed for a cabin with a hot tub in a snowy destination, flights, car rentals, or even a train ride,” says Joshua Roe, Director/Assistant Teaching Professor, WVU Institute of Technology.
Do’s and Don’t’s for winter travel
“One should not be drawn by lower rates at the expense of one’s comfort. If warmer weather is your interest, then try to consider places that offer milder weather but much better rates and bargain packages…Avoid air tickets with multiple stops, especially of going through airports with expected stormy weather,” Zaher (Zach) Hallab, Ph.D., Professor, California State University East Bay shares.
