Last month, 93% of TSA PreCheck travelers waited less than five minutes during security check-in. This means over 9 million passengers enjoyed expedited checkpoint processes in over 200 airports and 73 airlines in the U.S. 30 of the busiest airports in the nation including Atlanta, Ft. Lauderdale, and John F. Kennedy Airport in New York are on the list. If you’re a frequent traveler, you know just how much of a hassle it is, especially during the holidays, to get through security. That’s why TSA PreCheck is a lifesaver.
With TSA PreCheck, you no longer have to remove your liquids, shoes, belts or light jackets when going through the TSA security line. No more having to take your laptop out of its tight-fitting sleeve in your backpack, either. Because the government and Homeland Security deems you a low-risk traveler, you are able to take advantage of an expedited screening process. You now can focus more on getting to your destination without being caught up in the crowds at your security checkpoint.
Here are a few things you need to know about applying for TSA PreCheck.
Step 1: Submit an online application.
Visit the TSA PreCheck home page and click “Apply Now.” It will take you to the next screen to begin filling out your application including information like your name, address, date of birth, and immigration documentation (if applicable).
Step 2: Schedule an appointment.
Be sure to schedule an in-person appointment at one of TSA’s 380 enrollments centers across the United States. At the appointment, you’ll be asked a series of questions and asked to validate your identity and citizenship. TSA’s calendar allows you to find a center and schedule an appointment within 45 days of completing your application, but the sooner the better. Besides, the interview process only take you 10-20 min.
Step 3: Background Check and Fingerprinting.
You will have to submit to and pass a background check and be fingerprinted at the enrollment center. You will be asked questions about yourself for verification and about your travel history. Bring the two forms of ID you were asked to submit during the application.
Step 4: Don’t forget to pay your fees.
You will receive a five-year membership in exchange for an $85 fee. Varied credit cards will be reimbursed for the $100 Global Entry fees, such as Chase Sapphire Reserve, The Platinum Card from American Express, and the Amex Platinum. Delta Platinum or Diamond status holders can choose a Global Entry voucher as one of their Choice benefits. Diamond members are guaranteed the combined perks of Global Entry and TSA PreCheck.
Step 5: Await for a Response And Travel More
Once your background check comes back sound, within a month, you will receive your Known Traveler Number (KTN) so that you can begin using the TSA PreCheck security check lines. To begin taking advantage of PreCheck, add your Known Traveler Number to your reservations whenever you book a flight online or over the phone.
*TSA PreCheck must be listed on your boarding pass or you will not be granted access.
*This does not apply when traveling from international airports outside the U.S.
