If you want to travel from Rome to the Dolomites, the stunning mountain range in northern Italy, consider taking the Espresso Cadore. This new vintage sleeper train offers a unique and comfortable experience.
The Espresso Cadore, introduced by FS Treni Turistici Italiani, a subsidiary of the Italian railway company, is the first of its sort in Italy. It connects Rome Termini station to Calalzo-Pieve di Cadore-Cortina station near the famed ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo, widely known as the Queen of the Dolomites.
All About Espresso Cadore
The train began service on December 15, 2023, and will run until February 15, 2024. It has 220 beds in various cabin configurations, including single, double, and bunk beds, with deluxe amenities and accessories for guests. In addition to the bar and lounge areas, the train has a restaurant car where you can have breakfast and dinner prepared with local products. You can also reserve a bike slot, hire and recharge an electronic bike, or keep your ski equipment on board.
The journey takes around 10 hours, departing Rome at 9:40 p.m. and arriving in Calalzo at 7:57 a.m., or vice versa. Along the way, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Italian countryside while going through Orte, Orvieto, Treviso, Ponte nelle Alpi, and Longarone. The train also stops at these stations, where you can get on and off as you choose. Once in Calalzo, catch the Espresso Cadore Link bus, which will take you directly to Cortina d’Ampezzo in less than an hour. There, you can experience the beauty and activities of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its breathtaking scenery, hiking paths, ski slopes, and cultural attractions.
A Convenient And Sustainable Way To Travel
The Espresso Cadore is not only a quick and comfortable mode of transportation but also environmentally friendly and sustainable. Using the train rather than driving or flying reduces carbon footprints and helps preserve the environment.
The price of the Espresso Cadore varies according to the kind of accommodation and the season. For the entire voyage, plan to pay between 160 euros (approx. $176) for a bunk bed and 385 euros (approx. $422) for a single cabin, which includes dinner and breakfast. You can purchase tickets online at the Trenitalia website or any authorized travel agent.
