A new airline is launching in May, and it’s targeting a very specific customer: dogs. BARK, Inc., creator of the popular subscription-based Bark Box, has partnered with a jet charter company to launch BARK Air, the world’s first airline centered around dogs.

The experience is designed for dogs and their “human companions,” according to an April press release. The premium flight options will be available for booking beginning May 23 from New York City.

Creating a New Experience

Many travelers who have pets experience difficulty flying with them. Pet owners with larger dogs, especially, struggle frequently when trying to board planes with them. This often results in dogs being denied travel, cramped in travel bags, or flying as cargo under the plane.

BARK Air is planning to offer a less stressful and more spacious option for dogs and their owners. The service, the company says, represents its commitment to prioritizing the well-being of dogs in comparison to typical “less-than-ideal” solutions. The company, through prioritizing the pet experience, aims to improve the travel experience for everyone.

“When we started BARK in 2011, we were on a mission to disrupt the dog space and create products designed for dogs and their humans. We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over the years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs – from the ground to the skies,” Matt Meeker, the co-founder and chief executive officer at Bark, Inc., said.

Meeker said the company believes the new venture will introduce more pet owners to the Bark brand and “help enrich the lives of dogs and their people around the world.”

A White Glove Approach

The brand plans to take a “white glove” approach to the pet flying experience, with unparalleled pampering and first-class in-flight services.

The BARK Air experience starts with a personalized concierge service that collects information about each dog and their travel plans. From dietary needs to space requirements, each pet passenger is carefully thought of. On travel day, dogs can socialize with fellow dog travelers at check-in while their human companions enjoy meals prepared by on-site chefs.

The concierge will then evaluate each dog to ensure comfort and provide any necessary care before or during the flight. The plane will also feature calming pheromones, music, and colors to create a relaxing environment for all furry passengers.

During the flight, dogs will be given water and a variety of BARK-branded treats, snacks, and surprises to pamper them. Special aids such as calming treats, noise-canceling ear muffs, and calming jackets will also be available.

For the initial launch, flight routes will service the New York area via Westchester County Airport (HPN) to Los Angeles at Van Nuys Airport (VNY) and London, U.K. via Stansted Airport (STN). Bookings are now open for flights between these cities.
