Accra is a small, bustling city where you’ll easily find a number of gems to do and see. Even if your visit will be a short one, there are endless avenues to explore. Here are a few of our favorite activities that you’ll want to check out while you are in Ghana.

Chocolate Tasting

Ghana is one of the largest producers of cocoa in the world, 57 Chocolate was the brainchild of two sisters that began when they decided to hold chocolate tastings events of their handcrafted chocolates at their workshop in Legon. While you are in Accra, you may want to try some of the wonderful flavors such as mocha, coconut, and hibiscus. If you find a flavor you like you can buy in bulk for a special gift to bring back home. 

Fantasy Coffins

If you are looking for a unique experience you can visit a fantasy coffin shop where you will find coffins in every shape and size. Your only limit is your imagination. There are coffins shaped like fish, soda bottles, and even Bibles. If you are in the market for one of these coffins, it is possible to have one commission and then shipped home. More than likely, you’ll probably just want to see these coffins and take some pictures for your social media accounts.

Artists Alliance Gallery

If you are still looking for gifts, this is a great place to shop. You’ll find all types of locally made gifts: from books to jewelry, and beads. There are also, paintings, sculpture, and antiques. This large shop is located in Labadi, on rocks overlooking the city beach. Unlike many other shops in Ghana, the items in this shop are marked so you won’t have to guess what you will be expected to pay.

Makola Market

Makola Market is a traditional outdoor market with stalls selling everything from fabrics to local themed souvenirs. Many of the stalls are operated by locals wearing traditional dress. Be prepared to haggle for the best price. Not only can you buy souvenirs but you can also find fresh produce including exotic fruit and vegetables.

Labadi Beach

Labadi is one of the most popular beaches in Accra. When visiting this beach you’ll find waterfront restaurants that serve cold Star lager, as well as delicious fried fish and spicy Jollof, There’s always a party on the beach from acrobatics to horse riding. Although the water looks inviting, the waves can be rough so swimming out too far is not recommended.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

One of the most interesting attractions Accra is the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, This is a great place to relax and enjoy acres of landscaped flowerbeds and gardens. This park is a memorial to Ghana’s first president and founding father, Kwame Nkrumah, and is the location where he declared independence in 1957. The main feature of this park is the impressive mausoleum where Nkrumah and his wife are buried. There is also a museum dedicated to the life of the former president.
