The low-budget carrier Avelo Airlines announced its latest venture into the Caribbean market. Starting Nov. 15, Avelo Airlines will commence nonstop service between Southern Connecticut and San Juan, Puerto Rico. This strategic move marks a significant milestone for the airline and the region. The company promises to create new opportunities for travelers on both ends of the route.

Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO, Andrew Levy, expressed excitement about the airline’s latest announcement. The service will operate twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, utilizing Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft.

Levy believes that the new route will facilitate easier and more affordable travel for Connecticut’s growing Puerto Rican community. He also expects the convenience and affordability of the service to attract travelers from Puerto Rico to visit Connecticut. The announcement was made at a Puerto Rico-themed ceremony at Tweed Airport. It featured local and state officials, including Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal.

Puerto Rico’s rich history

Governor Lamont commended Avelo Airlines for its continued growth at Tweed Airport. He highlighted the benefits of the new route for the region’s economic competitiveness and quality of life.

San Juan will be Avelo Airlines’ first Caribbean destination. It will expand the airline’s route map to 47 destinations across 25 states and one U.S. territory. Puerto Rico’s rich history, culture, exceptional food, beaches and mountains make it a desirable travel spot. San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is the main gateway to the island. It is located minutes away from San Juan.

Since starting service in November 2021, Avelo Airlines has flown more than 1.3 million customers on more than 10,000 flights.
