San Juan Pride & Boqueron Pride
There’s no better excuse for a vacation to Puerto Rico than the annual San Juan Pride and Boqueron Pride celebrations. Both happening in June, travelers have time to get ahead of travel bookings and start planning to celebrate Pride Boriqua-style.
San Juan Pride takes place in early June, marked by a large parade with lots to see. Rainbow-colored floats, stiltwalkers, go-go dancers, and drag personalities take over the streets of San Juan to celebrate the Queer community. Once the parade ends, locals and visitors will gather at Escambrón Beachside Park for live entertainment and a vendor marketplace.
Held the second weekend in June, Orgullo Boquerón is a weekend-long celebration featuring dance parties, drag shows, and live music. Held in southwestern Puerto Rico, Cabo Rojo is approximately three hours from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). According to Discover Puerto Rico, some believe this Pride event is even bigger and wilder than its San Juan counterpart. Aside from the parties and performances, a grand parade also takes place on Sunday. This year’s festival dates are June 7-9, 2024, with additional artist and event announcements to come this spring.
Kweens Klub
One look at Kweens Klub’s digital presence, and you’ll know this is definitely where to go for nightlife vibes with flair. Located in the heart of Santurce in San Juan, various drag performances and themed dance parties await the party friends in the crew each week. Depending on when you visit, you’re subject to find yourself at a role-play party or even a guest performance by a RuPaul’s Drag Race alum. The premier LGBTIQ+ nightclub is open from Wednesday to Sunday, starting at 7 p.m.
La Sombrilla Rosa
La Sombrilla Rosa describes itself as a “straight-friendly” gay bar, so no matter your preference you’re guaranteed to have a good time here. In the narrow, cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, La Sombrilla Rosa is a cozy, no-frills bar and one of several inclusive bars in the area. The neon-filled atmosphere is relaxed but fun, and locals are quick to invite you into their dance party. For a late-night snack, ask the bartenders if they’re selling empanadas–the only way to end a night in the streets of Puerto Rico.
La Respuesta
Another Santurce neighborhood spot to visit is La Respuesta. This artsy nightclub is for the classic hip-hop, dancehall, and R&B fans. People have been partying within these dimly lit walls since 1999. This spot is primarily filled with locals but anyone is welcome. Live band performances, karaoke, and gaming nights are the type of entertainment you’ll find here. The occasional dance battle is also subject to burst out of the crowd on more popular nights. La Respeusta is open each night from Friday to Monday, and early arrival is strongly suggested, especially on Monday nights.
Condado Ocean Club
Condado Ocean Club is Puerto Rico’s inclusive adult-only, boutique hotel–warmly welcoming every guest the same. Conveniently located in the Condado neighborhood of San Juan, Condado Ocean Club has modern touches and oceanfront views. Nightly rates this summer average $325 for Laguna views, although the minor upgrade to an oceanfront room is well worth it.
Along with floor-to-ceiling water views, rooms are outfitted with a mini-bar, plush bedding, and other amenities for added comfort. Don’t forget to take a dip in the infinity pool, and let the cabana staff deliver your beverage of choice as you overlook the beachfront. If you want to venture out nearby, the property is also within walking distance of the Condado district’s abundant social scene of nightlife and restaurants.
