Working remotely and traveling full-time has its pros and cons. As a digital nomad for over a year, I often get asked: How do you make friends abroad? Making friends abroad is similar to how you make friends anywhere as an adult.

Ultimately you have to be open to receiving new friendships and putting yourself outside of your comfort zone. So check out these tips below if you are considering moving abroad.

1. Get online

Social media is a great tool to utilize when making friends abroad. You research Facebook and WhatsApp groups for just about anything. There are Facebook groups for people who enjoy hiking, cooking, and just about any interest abroad. You can also search sites like MeetUp and Eventbrite for events in your area.

2. Book group tours

Booking group tours when you first land in a new country is a great way to meet other travelers. Every country has free walking tours you can schedule, and sites like AIRBNB Experiences make booking fun excursions and activities easy. Also, connect with your Airbnb hosts at these tours for more recommendations and info about where solo travelers hang out in the city.

3. Get out of your comfort zone

It may sound like an easy cliche, but when we step out of our comfort zone, we enter the growing zone of life. If you’re nervous about making friends abroad, remember that other people are also looking for friendships! The great thing about traveling is that we get to challenge ourselves in new and exciting ways while expanding our social circle with diver people.
