Nightlife remains a major part of how cities attract visitors, but the qualities that define a strong after-dark scene increasingly extend beyond famous clubs or late closing times. Affordability, community, and the overall experience of going out helped shape Time Out’s Best Cities for Nightlife 2026 ranking, supported by Intrepid Travel. The publication surveyed more than 24,000 residents across 150 cities and gathered input from more than 100 Time Out editors and city experts. Local responses accounted for 70% of the final score, while expert evaluation contributed 30%.
The ranking considered nightlife quality and affordability, community and belonging, and how residents rated their cities for qualities including excitement, liveliness, diversity, friendliness, and safety. Time Out included only the highest-scoring city from each country. Bangkok ranked first globally, followed by Berlin, New York City, Melbourne, and São Paulo, while two African cities also made the top 20.
Time Out Travel Editor Grace Beard said the findings reflect a broader definition of nightlife. “A good night out is no longer defined by one type of venue,” Beard said in Time Out’s announcement.
Johannesburg Ranks Seventh Among The World’s Best Nightlife Cities
Johannesburg placed seventh globally, making it the highest-ranked African city on Time Out’s 2026 list. The South African city finished ahead of Brighton, Beijing, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Seoul. Time Out’s Johannesburg report highlighted its mix of clubs, casual pubs, and cocktail bars.
Johannesburg also scored strongly for affordability and community. The city received a 66% affordability score, while 80% of surveyed residents said it was easy to connect with people and find a sense of community. Johannesburg tied with Porto for the third-highest affordability rating among cities included in the final ranking.
The publication identified Gwigwi Mrwebi Street as one of Johannesburg’s major nightlife areas. Venues including Club A.M., AND Club, Bad Manors, and Carfax offer music ranging from deep house and techno to Afro-house, gqom, drum and bass, and experimental sounds. Time Out also pointed to Melville and Rosebank for cocktail bars, live music, and other nightlife options.
Accra Takes 18th Place For Nightlife In 2026
Accra ranked 18th, making Ghana the second African country represented in the global top 20. According to Time Out’s ranking, 56% of surveyed residents rated Accra’s nightlife quality positively, while 62% considered going out affordable. Live music and going for a drink each received a 67% affordability score. Three-quarters of respondents said they found it easy to connect with a community in Accra, while 65% described the city as welcoming and friendly.
Time Out identified Osu as one of Accra’s established nightlife centers, citing venues including Republic Bar, Bloom Bar, Purple Pub, and Front Back. East Legon has also developed a growing nightlife scene, with businesses including Mad Club and Heritage Craft Brewery. South Village and Fake Fridays cater to electronic music and Accra’s alté scene, while Rhythm and Brunch organizes events centered on 1990s R&B.
Johannesburg and Accra were the only African cities to appear in Time Out’s final top 20. Because the ranking includes only the highest-scoring city from each country, it does not provide a complete comparison of nightlife destinations within individual countries.
