Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis didn’t hold back his criticism of the NAACP after the organization issued a formal travel advisory warning Black Americans against visiting Florida. Speaking on Twitter’s “Spaces” platform during his presidential campaign announcement, DeSantis dismissed the advisory as a mere political maneuver, highlighting his state’s low crime rates and numerous Black-owned businesses, according to FOX News.

DeSantis On Crime In Florida

In response to the travel advisory, DeSantis exclaimed, “Claiming that Florida is unsafe is a total farce. I mean, are you kidding me? You look at cities around this country, they are awash in crime. In Florida, our crime rate is at a 50-year low. You look at the top 25 cities for crime in America. Florida does not have a single one amongst the top 25.”

DeSantis further criticized the NAACP for ignoring the violence and educational challenges faced by communities in cities like Baltimore and Chicago. He accused left-wing groups of colluding with the media to fabricate a narrative, calling the travel advisory a part of their long-standing tactics.

NAACP Travel Advisory

The NAACP formally announced the travel advisory on Saturday, citing DeSantis’ alleged attempts to erase Black history and impede diversity and inclusion programs in Florida schools. The advisory warned Black Americans and other marginalized groups that Florida is openly hostile toward them, disregarding their contributions and challenges.

However, DeSantis remained unfazed by the advisory, stating, “The good news is fewer and fewer Americans are gullible enough to believe this drivel, and platforms like Twitter allow people to debunk these lies in real time.” He urged citizens not to uncritically accept narratives from legacy media and left-wing groups, emphasizing the importance of being conscientious citizens.

Highlighting his commitment to equal opportunity, DeSantis mentioned Florida’s highest number of Black-owned businesses in the nation and the increased representation of African Americans in state agencies during his administration. He emphasized that success should be based on merit rather than identity politics.

DeSantis also pointed out Florida’s strong record in Black education outcomes and highlighted that NAACP leaders reside in the state and have publicly enjoyed their visits there.

As DeSantis concluded his remarks, he expressed confidence that people could see through the political agenda behind the travel advisory, emphasizing Florida’s consistent population growth and record-breaking tourism numbers.

The battle between DeSantis and the NAACP over the travel advisory exemplifies the wider political divisions surrounding race, identity, and perceptions of safety.
