There are roughly 102,700 flights every day. With most planes carrying close to 300 people easily, you can imagine the germs that float around. You would think that headrests or trays are the dirtiest places but you’re wrong.
According to one flight attendant, the seat pockets are the most disgusting places on an aircraft. They are never cleaned and just about anything can be stuck down in there. Tissues, dirty napkins, even underwear have been found.
“I ALWAYS recommend you never, ever, ever, EVER use or put anything in the seat pocket,” Reddit user HausofDarling wrote. “They are cleared of rubbish but are never ‘cleaned’. I have pulled out and seen all sorts been pulled out from there. Dirty tissues, sick bags, knickers, socks, peoples feet, gum, half sucked sweets, apple cores… and then next flight you go and put your phone/laptop/iPad in there.”

Well, it gets worse. The flight attendant said she has also found body parts in there. “I’ve never found a severed foot but people seem to curl up into a fetal position by putting their feet in the seat pocket. Also finger and toenails. Just… I don’t know why.” Boredom does happen when you’re sitting on a plane for hours, but cutting your nails shouldn’t be an option to keep busy.
After some lab tests, headrests, the seatbelt buckle, tray table, and the inside handle of the bathroom were found to be filled with germs. HausofDarling also said the bathroom isn’t the place you want to be to pass up time on an airplane. Between people handling their business and others wanting to explore the mile high club, it’s definitely not the cleanest of place.
“Please do not ever walk into a toilet with bare feet,” they wrote. “I promise you, 9 times out of 10, that is not water on the floor.”
