Salvador is Brazil’s third-largest city and known for its annual week-long Carnival celebrations and as the former capital of the country. Salvador (also known as Bahia) merges African influence, bustling nightlife, wildlife preservation into one fascinating city. Here are a few attractions to fill your itinerary.

Aquariums

Salvador is committed to the preserving the habitats of their beloved sea turtles. With over five species of sea turtles calling over 680 miles of the Brazilian coastline home, a visit to Project Tamar at Praia Do Forte is not to be missed. The center gives visitors the chance to meet sea turtles and while learning how to protect them and their habitat.

Amusement Parks

If you’re looking for a family-friendly attraction or want to let out your inner child, shoreline waterpark Eco Parque Arraial d’Ajuda not only has water slides, wave pools and ziplines, but it’s surrounded by the sea — so you just might catch a glimpse of local wildlife. The park offers a day pass for a cost of $38.50 for adults and $30 for children.

Zoos

Salvador Zoo and Botanical Park is the largest zoo in the area, offering free admission for animal lovers and tourist that want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. The hill-top zoo not only provides a picturesque view, but it is home to over 1500 animals (including endangered species) that are inhabitants of Brazil. The zoo is closed on Mondays but open Tuesday through Sunday from 8:30 am until 5:30 pm.

Like the Salvador Zoo, the Getulio Vargas Zoo is free. The zoo is known for its beautiful birds, giving a home to endangered species, and the plant life that you’ll take in as you get to know animals native to Brazil.
