Many of the best flight deals available right now are to the Caribbean, but as hurricane season looms, it’s important for travelers to know just what to do when traveling to destinations in the Atlantic. 2017 marked one of the most devastating hurricane seasons since 2005 according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration producing six major hurricanes of Category 3 storms or higher and going down as the seventh most active season in the historical record dating to 1851. Among the three most devastating hurricanes that made landfall in 2017 were Harvey in Texas, Irma in the Caribbean and the southeastern U.S., and Maria in the Caribbean and Puerto Rico.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 until the end of November, and peaks in the middle of summer. “You typically see a peak in August until the end of October,” said Maureen O’Leary, spokesperson for NOAA.

This year, NOAA’s forecasters are predicting an above-normal hurricane season with a likelihood of up to 16 named storms, including nine hurricanes. Four of those storms could be major, so it’s important to have a contingency plan in place in case you plan to travel this hurricane season.

1). According to Ready.gov, it’s important to know your area’s risk of hurricanes and signup for the community’s warning system before your trip.

2). Make a game plan. No matter if you’re traveling alone, or with friends and family, FEMA recommends making an emergency plan that determines where you will meet and how to get there. Additionally, verify with your accommodation provider the resources they can offer such as an emergency kit, food, and water.

3). Flights can be disrupted and can cause you to be separated from your baggage, be sure to pack necessities in your carry-on bags.

4). Get travel insurance. If you booked with a travel agent, be sure to inquire about travel insurance plans and what is covered during a weather-related event. Check with your airline provider as well to confirm its cancellation and refund policy during hurricane season. Investing in a travel insurance plan may help to recover some or all of your costs in weather-related incidents.
