Travel + Leisure magazine has announced its 2020 Destination of the Year, basing it on a place that captures the travel trends for the upcoming year.

This location is going to be one worth saving your coins for — not to mention, it’s on the other side of the world!

Australia (also known as the Land Down Under) has been awarded the coveted title because of its “stunning natural landscapes,” culinary scene and culture.

Travel + Leisure editors shared that there have been new hotels opening less-visited areas of Australia which will be a great opportunity for travelers to explore a new destination. Aussie chefs and winemakers have been using local ingredients to shape the narrative of native Australian cuisine, attracting foods from all over the world.

“While some things have remained constant in the land Down Under — the exuberant hospitality, the otherworldly scenery — there’s now a fresh energy spreading across the country,” according to Travel + Leisure editors.

Editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford says in a statement: “Why Australia? And why now? It’s always been considered a ‘bucket list’ spot, a place that people would reserve for a once-in-a-lifetime trip when they had a longer window of time to travel.”

Gifford goes on to say, “In today’s 24/7-connected world, we want you to switch off and take that time. If the thrill of travel is to be pushed, mentally and physically, to discover something new — and to appreciate the simple, awe-inspiring beauty of this earth — Australia and its seven states deliver and then some.”

This is the fifth year of Travel + Leisure’s Destination of the Year with Japan and Portugal being past honorees.
