San Francisco’s Most Expensive Airbnb Is Being Converted Into A Hotel

San Francisco’s “Western Addition” district is an area known for its sidewalk cafes, bars, trendy shops, and musical history.  In addition to the infamous Victorian and Edwardian houses that date back to the 1960s in the area, lies the city’s most expensive Airbnb.

 

Once priced at $10,000 per night, the historic Payne Mansion could become more affordable now that the home, which dates back to 1881, will be converted into a new boutique hotel, restaurant and bistro serving California-French cuisine.

 

The mansion will be renamed Mansion on Sutter, and the restaurant will appropriately be named 1881. Both are anticipated to open this fall.

 

Besides its beauty and charm, one thing that makes this hotel unique is the fact that it’s the only pre-1906 Victorian home in San Francisco.  According to Fortune, many mansions and other buildings were destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and the subsequent fires that burned much of the city.

 

The property was on the market for several years before it was purchased by Bernard Rosenson. The Rosenson family owns several hotels and restaurants in California, including the Sky Room restaurant in Long Beach and the Mirabelle Inn, located in Solvang.

 

Before transforming into an expensive Airbnb, and then a boutique hotel, the 13-room mansion served as a restaurant, hotel, offices, and even a YMCA.


 

Located at 1409 Sutter Street, the more than 130-year-old property will be close to Union Square, Pier 39, and Ghirardelli Square.

 

It’s unclear how many rooms the Mansion on Sutter will have, but the property includes eight bathrooms and two events spaces. Renters could book one room at $74 per night or the entire hotel for $10,000m including a penthouse space, according to the Business Journals San Francisco.

 

The hotel is not open yet.  The website, however, has a listing of career opportunities for various positions which could mean the Mansion on Sutter will open for business sooner rather than later.
