If you think paying for checked bags is a pain, it’s going to get worse — at least for those flying with JetBlue Airways. The airline has recently increased their checked baggage fees for the second time in the last two years.

Passengers flying the airline will have to pay $35 (previously $30) for their first checked bag and the second checked bag will cost $45 (previously $40).

The increase in checked baggage fees was announced on JetBlue’s website and if you’re flying from Thursday onwards, you’ll have to pay the new fees.

However, if you add a checked bag online or by using the JetBlue app at least 24 hours before your flight’s departure, you will receive a $5 discount.

You will have to pay the new fees if you check a bag within less than 24 hours of your flight’s departure.

JetBlue shares in a statement: “By incentivizing customers to select their checked bag option ahead of time using our website or award-winning mobile app, we can reduce transactions in the airport lobby and improve the customer experience.”

Passengers with the JetBlue credit card and those who pay higher fares are in luck because checked bags are included in the airfares.

According to the Bureau of Transportation statistics, JetBlue received $270 million in baggage fees from January to September 2019. This amount was a 14% increase from the first 9 months of 2018.

The increase in JetBlue’s checked baggage could influence other major U.S. airlines like Delta, United, and American to do the same.
