50 In 50: Enjoy These Museums For Free On Museum Day This September
Visiting museums can offer insights into the history and culture of a city while offering aesthetically pleasing architecture and art. It can also be expensive, especially if you’re like me and can no longer rely on your student ID for discounted tickets.
Fortunately for museum-lovers, Museum Day is approaching and it’s the one day you can attend your favorite museum for free. On Saturday, September 21, there will be more than 1,500 museums across all 50 states allowing people to experience the museum free of charge.
The 15th annual Museum Day is hosted each year by the Smithsonian magazine. Amy Wilkins, the chief revenue officer at Smithsonian tells Travel + Leisure: “There are so many great museums and cultural institutions throughout our country that you may not even know about, some of them in your own backyard! Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day draws attention to these hidden gems, showcases their programming, both year-round and Museum Day specific, and provides an impetus to visit without ticket costs posing a barrier.”
In order to secure a spot, head to smithsonianmag.com, select which museum you’d like the visit and download a ticket. You’re only allowed to download one ticket per email address but each ticket allows two people to enter for free.
According to Museum Day organizers, more than 453,000 people downloaded a ticket last year.
Wilkins also said in regards to Museum Day: “This event is important as it highlights the culture, history, science, art and nature that each state has to offer and represents a national commitment to access to these unique places.”
