“We boast prehistoric origins,” said Efisio Arbau, Ollolai’s mayor to CNN. “My crusade is to rescue our unique traditions from falling into oblivion. Pride in our past is our strength. We’ve always been tough people and won’t allow our town to die.”

So, what’s the catch? You will have to put in some serious work and eventually, a bit more money. Most of the homes are in very poor condition and buyers must commit to a refurbishment within three years, which will likely cost about $25,000.
Previously, buyers were expected to shop for these homes online and unseen, now it’s even easier to own your $1 Italian dream villa thanks to new websites giving potential buyers more details about each home including photos of the exterior, interactive maps, and information in English. Any approved buyer will still have to travel to Italy to finalize the sale.

Heritage councilor Toti Nigrelli told CNN that there are about 100 houses for sale now and another 400 that may become available in the future in the Sicilian town of Mussomeli.
