Every year from June until about October, southern right and humpback whales migrate from their icy feeding grounds off Antarctica to the warm waters off South Africa’s coast. During this time they come to breed and calve and stay until early December. Because of this, July through September are the absolutely perfect months to vacation in Hermanus and enjoy some whale watching. Boat and helicopter tours are offered, giving you the perfect view of these majestic creatures. If you happen to visit South Africa in September this year, you can even attend the 28th annual Hermanus Whale Festival from September 27-29.
In August, there is ‘Kalfifees’, the Calf Festival, in which the first calves are honored by the town. Kalfifees is a smaller celebration than the Hermanus Whale Festival but it is definitely worth a look if you are in the area at the time.
