If you haven’t been under a rock over the last few months, then you know that Tulum has been the destination to be in since reopening. With Mexico being one of the only places with somewhat relaxed quarantine rules, travelers all across the United States have decided to pay the area a visit.

For anyone who visits Tulum, they must first fly into Cancun’s International Airport, then take the 90-minute car ride to reach the destination. With the influx of visitors over the last few months, The President of Mexico announced his plans to build an airpot in Tulum.

“A new airport will be built in Tulum, it will help [the economy] a lot,” President López Obrador announced at a press conference.

The new airport will be built by the army and open in 2023. There were plans to build this airport nearly ten years ago, too. Those plans fell through, but the president is adamant that the current announcement will go through as planned.

The Tulum airport would be apart of the new Maya Train, currently under construction. This “train” will connect cities and towns in five southeastern states, and is expected to be completed in 2022.

“Quintana Roo is one of the fastest growing [Mexican] states, I can tell you that the new Tulum airport will be built.”
