Cape Town is one of the most popular cities in South Africa, next to Johannesburg and Durban. No matter what you may enjoy while traveling, Cape Town has something to spark your interest.

Here are a few things to know before you visit.

Things are very inexpensive

While you may get to Cape Town and feel as though you are somewhere in America or even Europe, you will find that things come with a very low price tag. From transportation to eating at a local cafe, you can truly ball on a budget while there.

It is every wine lovers dream destination

Just outside of the city you will find the world-famous Stellenbosch region. This area is home to dozens of wineries and vineyards. Even wine tastings here are inexpensive. Some places offer basic tastings for as low as $3.17.

Robben Island is a must-see

If you know anything about South African history, you know how much of an integral part Nelson Mandela played in it. If you want to get one of the most authentic experiences around Cape Town, I highly suggest the Robben Island tour. This is the small island and prison where Mandela was confined for years. Most of the tours are led by former inmates who will literally move you to tears.

You aren’t supposed to get close to the penguins at Boulders Beach

We’ve all seen the photos plastered around social media of people on a beach filled with penguins. Boulders Beach is the popular beach right outside of Cape Town that is home to a large penguin colony. Signs around the beach will clearly warn visitors not to cross the gates into the penguin’s territory. Unfortunately, not everyone wants to follow the rules. Don’t be that person. You can get great shots from the fence.

Camp’s Bay is amazingly beautiful

One of the most popular beaches around the city is Camp’s Bay. It will give you a similar feel to California’s Malibu area. The best part about relaxing on this beach is the gorgeous view of Table Mountain in the backdrop. It’s definitely worthy of an Instagram photoshoot.

You must visit Table Mountain

Table Mountain is the backdrop for all things Cape Town. There are a couple of ways to reach the top. You can take the cable car up and back to reach the peak. There are several walking paths once you get to the top where you can get a complete 360-degree view of the area from above. If you are feeling a little bold, you can hike to the peak and back. Either way, the cable car is there for you.

Uber is your best mode of transportation

Transportation can make or break any vacation. Luckily, Cape Town offers Uber. The rides are very reasonable no matter where you may need to go. You can also rent a car or even private service during your stay.

Always bargain at the markets

If you enjoy collecting souvenirs and authentic memorabilia from your vacations, then you will enjoy the markets in Cape Town. Just like most third-world countries, you can also bargain for the best deals.
