In early January, former NBA star Joakim Noah announced that his wedding ceremony with Brazilian model Lais Ribeiro would be in Brazil. But if you automatically thought Rio de Janeiro, you are wrong. The couple chose for Trancoso, a small coastal town located in the state of Bahia.

Noah’s choice confirms the idea that Trancoso has solidified itself as one of the most attractive cities for international celebrities. Before Noah, other celebrities like as Beyoncé, Will Smith, Naomi Campbell, Leonardo di Caprio, JK Rowling among others spent vacations in Trancoso— and it is considered the most luxurious destination in Brazil.

But what is so special about Trancoso that makes celebrities flock there?

Trancoso is one of the oldest villages in Brazil. For five centuries, the city remained practically isolated from the rest of the world. It had no electricity, roads or infrastructure until 1970, when a group of hippies arrived, fell in love and decided to stay.

Today, the city is a beautiful mix of traditional with luxury, offering stunning beaches along the coast, pleasant climate, fancy hotels and sophisticated restaurants. Trancoso also provides a bit of exclusivity, which is key to many celebrities when traveling.

When Beyoncé visited in 2013, she fell in love with the town’s beauty, which led her to shoot the music video for the song ‘Blue’ along the beaches there.
