There’s nothing like a bike ride that allows you to appreciate scenery at your own pace. Over the years, more cities in the US have become more accommodating for bikes.

However, when it comes to bridges, not all are great for biking. For example, before the two-way bike lane opened in 2021, Brooklyn Bridge was highly congested.

Here are four bridges where you can safely ride your bike in the U.S.

Golden Gate Bridge — California

This iconic, San Francisco bridge offers ample space for pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists.

Pull your bike over to the side to check out the sweeping views of the bay. You may get a visit from “Karl,” which is the nickname locals have for the fog.

The path leading to the bridge is pretty flat, but you’ll encounter some hills before you get to the bridge. You can spend a day exploring the restaurants, shops and bars of Sausalito. If you’re too tired to bike back to San Francisco, you can take your bike on the ferry.

George Washington Bridge — New York/New Jersey

New York and New Jersey joined forces to improve the George Washington Bridge. Now, it’s more accessible than it has ever been for cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles.

Old Seven Mile Bridge — Florida

This historic bridge in the Florida Keys opened “following a $44 million restoration.” Located in the city of Mararthon, it connects the Middle and the Lower Keys.

The idea behind the restoration was to preserve the historic elements. It was built in 1912 and had to be renovated to make sure it met modern day standards.

Royal Gorge Bridge — Colorado

This is the highest suspension bridge in the U.S. There are 1,257 wooden planks suspended 956 feet above ground.

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist, or enjoy it casually, being prepared is crucial. Bring sunblock, sunglasses and a hat, and be prepared for sudden weather changes.
