The Eiffel Tower is about to get a major facelift ahead of 2024 – its first big change in more than 50 years.

The Paris icon will lose its signature “Eiffel Tower Brown” that it has sported since 1968 and be replaced with gold for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Painting began in 2019, and is expected to be complete by 2022 since all the painting is being done by hand. The cost of the project is reported to be $60 million.

The Eiffel Tower receives a new coat of paint every seven years to restore and protect its metallic structure from the damage from the wind, rain, sun, and pollution.

In 2024, the Eiffel Tower will play a vital role during the Summer Olympics as it will serve as the backdrop for the triathlon and open water swimming events, France 24 reports.
