Medellin was once known for being the home of the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar, and while his legacy is still what many associate with the Columbian city it has also grown into much more. Medellin is now a destination for tourists around the world, and with its growing culinary scene, we want to share a few restaurants for you to check out when you make your way over to the “City of Eternal Spring.”
Mondongos
When you’re sharing tables with the locals, you know you’ve found an authentic restaurant. Mondongos has two locations in Medellin (and one Miami) and offers traditional Colombian cuisine. One other thing you can prepare for, aside from a great meal, is a long line, so bring your patience and appetite — and maybe even a snack.
Mundo Verde
If you’re looking for a healthy spin on the local cuisine, Mundo Verde should be on your list. Their menu has an array of fresh juices, salads, power bowls and wraps to counter the meat-heavy meals Columbia is known for. Be sure to feed your sweet tooth with some dessert, we hear they aren’t to be missed.
Restaurante Hatoviejo
Like many restaurants in the area, Restaurante Hatoviejo serves up classic Columbian cuisine, but with an upscale flair and beautifully plated food.
Carmen
Carmen merges traditional Columbian cuisine with Californian influence as the restaurant is run by American-Colombian couple, Carmen Angel and Rob Pevitts. From the food to the waitstaff, guests will enjoy a memorable meal.
Toro Restaurante
Meat lovers rejoice! Here is a place where you come for the steak, but might end up with a burger since both have rave reviews. The other great thing about this gem is the prices are reasonable.
Herbario
Being a vegetarian in Columbia might not seem ideal, but thanks to El Herbario even a non-meat eater can have a great meal. For our pescetarian out there be sure to try the salmon tartar and the crab ceviche.
El Cielo
Having traditional meals in a city is important, but if you want to take a step out of your dining comfort zone look no further than El Cielo. The restaurant offers a thirteen-course meal with six wine pairings, but that isn’t the most interesting part since each course is artfully presented — and each meal starts with a chocolate hand bath.
