One thing that travelers love about Madrid is its affordability compared to other European cities, which makes it the perfect destination for budget travelers.

Even though it’s the capital of Spain, it operates like a smaller city. The best way to get around is by foot so that means more money in your pockets during your stay.

At the top of your itinerary should be a visit to Puerto del Sol. Known as the “Gate of the Sun,” it is one of the most famous attractions in Madrid and the center point of Spain.

With its semi-circular shape, it is a junction for many of the city’s historical and busiest streets such as Mayor, Arenal, Alcalá and Preciados, as well as the starting point for all major radial roads in Spain, according to Es Madrid.

Here you will find the old Post Office building, the famous Tio Pepe sign, and the Kilometre Zero plaque on the floor to see.

Inside of the monuments are closed to the public, but visitors can stroll along the walkway during the temple opening hours from 10 a.m. through 8 p.m. everyday except Monday.
