About this guide
Sheltered between rolling mountains and valleys of Herzegovina, Mostar, Bosnia, is a captivating city where Old World charm flows along the Neretva River. With its cobblestone streets along the Stari Most (Old Bridge) and Ottoman-inspired architecture, this southeastern European city offers an escape that’s deeply cultural, photogenic, and budget-friendly for anyone. Travelers will find a warm welcome from locals, incredible Balkan cuisine, and panoramic views that rival any major European destination without the crowds. From taking fascinating history tours to chasing waterfalls to just slowing down and soaking up a slower pace of life, Mostar is an unforgettable stop on any European adventure.
The Mostar International Airport is smaller with seasonal flights, mainly from other European cities. However, many travelers fly into Sarajevo, which is about two hours away, or Dubrovnik, Croatia, nearly three hours away. These larger airports offer more frequent international routes and buses, trains, and rental cars are available. If arriving by air, planning ground transportation ahead of time allows a smooth transition into the city.
Driving to Mostar is scenic and straightforward, especially when coming from Sarajevo, Dubrovnik, or Split. The roads are generally well-maintained, and having a car allows visitors to explore nearby towns like Blagaj or Kravice Waterfalls. Parking in Mostar's Old Town is limited, but there are paid lots just outside the historic area. Be sure to carry local currency for tolls and parking fees.
Buses and trains connect Mostar with major cities like Sarajevo, Split, and Dubrovnik. Buses are usually more frequent and faster than trains, and they drop you near the Old Town. Within Mostar, local buses are limited, but taxis are affordable and easy to hail or call. For regional travel, buses remain the most reliable option.
Mostar is a very walkable city, especially the narrow streets of Old Town. Many of the main attractions—including Stari Most, Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, and the Old Bazaar—are a short stroll away from one another. To safely soak in the atmosphere, street art, and river views, wear comfortable shoes as the cobblestones can be slippery.
