Cape Town has been establishing itself as an innovative tech city with new startups opening monthly and contributions to most of the Western Cape’s GDP.

The mother city has now been named Africa’s leading digital city.

The report states that 50 percent of South Africa’s tech companies are based in Cape Town.

The South African capital of Cape Town employs more people in technology than any other city on the African continent.

Central City Improvement District (CCID) chairperson Rob Kane says: “The city and the CBD have geared itself to accommodate an emerging digitally savvy population that requires a business environment that offers good broadband connectivity, co-working spaces, accessibility and quality of lifestyle. The City Centre has all of these, and as a recognized digital city, the Cape Town CBD is well placed to support this vibrant new way of working.”

The city alone has contributed to about 338 million dollars (R5-billion) in foreign investments as a result of trading international businesses within the city.

Cape Town has invested over 67 million dollars (R1-billion) to developing a telecommunications channel which will ensure data connections to 300 various businesses and buildings.

There have been almost 5,000 jobs created because of this project and it is expected to be completed in 2020.
