Afrochella is switching things up for 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the festival is postponed, organizers have announced a new event: The Afrochella Block Party: a futuristic one-day event filled with musical performances, art installations, and local cuisine.

And if you can’t make it this year in person, no worries. Abdul Karim Abdullah, co-founder, and CEO of Afrochella, told Travel Noire that the event is available through a live stream during an interview.

“This year, the theme is ‘Afrofuturism,'” Abdullah said. “After last year’s Year of The Return campaign and this year’s Beyond The Year of Return,” we want people to imagine what Africa can be in the future.”

Afrochella has been celebrated in Ghana since 2017 and has worked to showcase the continent’s many emerging creatives, artists, and entrepreneurs.

It’s a big deal for the Accra-natives. According to Abdullah, Afrochella contributes more than 2 million dollars to the local economy.

“We wanted to have something for our local businesses as well because know that COVID-19 has hurt them, too,” Abdullah added.

To accommodate a smaller and safer crowd, Afrochella Block Party will be hosted at an outdoor venue, created for event-goers to take a step into the future of art, music, fashion, culture, and food. The event can also be live-streamed.
