You Can Rent An Island In China For Less Than $600
You don’t have to be rich to vacation on a private island.
In China, you can rent one for $353 a year for approximately 2.5 acres.
The country’s Liaoning province is home to the largest number of islands in northern China wee there are 633 islands in total. Only 44 are inhabited. The other 589 are empty, which is why the government has decided to put them up for rent.
Most of the islands are located off the coast in the Yellow Sea and many are scattered along the Yalu River that separates China from North Korea.
Over the years, pressure on marine resources in the region has increased and some of the islands and their surrounding marine territory have been “used inefficiently and extensively,” as reported in CNN.
The cheapest island rental option is $535 but it can get as high as $3.6 million per 2.5 acres per year. Pricing is determined on a six-tier scale that includes development plans, marine wildlife, and access to beaches.
It’s important to note that having the money isn’t enough. You will have to present detailed plans to the government ensuring that projects don’t require land reclamation or land development that could hurt the environment.
Projects will also have to fall within nine approved categories, including tourism, agriculture, fishing, and urban development. And while each category has a different price point, tourism and entertainment are the most popular categories for these rented islands, according to Yu Xingguang, a member of China’s Third Institute of Oceanography.
