This week Will Smith announced his new travel show in collaboration with Facebook Watch, Will Smith’s Bucket List.

It’s been a not-so-slow build. Will Smith swooped onto Instagram in December 2017 after an appearance on The Ellen Show. Since then, his Instagram has been a source of inspiration, laughter, and just really great content. The platform has quite literally been his digital playground. With over 28 million followers, Will has a knack for showcasing his family as well as introducing us to talented artists across the globe.

With the success of his wife’s Red Table Talk show on Facebook Watch, it was a bit of a no-brainer for Will to take his talents to Facebook as well. And, if the first episode is any indication, this show will not disappoint. Will brings the same energy he brings to his insanely popular Instagram and even brings his family along for the ride.

The significance of shows like Will’s shouldn’t be lost on those who watch, especially black travelers. Black travel shows are few, and those that showcase black families are even fewer (if they exist at all). Having one of the world’s most famous men showing people of color embarking on adventures around the world is a huge deal and it shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Outside of the obvious and necessary representation that the show provides, Will Smith’s approach to travel “television,” much like his overall brand, incorporates inspiration. It’s not just about seeing these beautiful places; it’s about “overcoming obstacles and punching fear in the mouth.” And don’t we all need a little bit of that in our lives?
