Hurricane Prep for Ocean-Adjacent Travel

By ashley nash baltazar

Hurricanes have been known to devastate cities like New Orleans and Texas. Among the worst storms in recent memory are Katrina and Harvey, the latter of which also impacted parts of Central America.

These two hurricanes (in 2005 and 2017, respectively) are tied as the costliest tropical cyclones on record. Harvey inflicted an astounding $125 billion in damage when it struck the South.

Knowing what's at stake, travelers are more focused than ever on being prepared for weather emergencies. Here's more on how to stay ready for anything during hurricane season.

If the area or city you're visiting is named in an evacuation zone, you'll need to know how to exit safely. Follow advice from local authorities and establish a clear plan with your friends and family.

Create an Evacuation Plan

Living in a hurricane territory means constantly replenishing your essentials. Stock up on food, water, batteries and other items needed for your survival.

Stock up on Essentials

Items left outside or in close proximity to doors or windows may pose safety threats during a hurricane. Be sure to secure your accommodations and follow instructions from hosts/hotel staff.

Secure Your Space

If your hotel accommodation has shutters along the windows, draw them. If not, use what you have near you to board or cover the windows. This will prevent items blowing in.

Cover Your Windows

In case you need to stock up on essentials during your stay, find the locations of local drugstores and hardware supply shops. There, you can buy a radio and batteries for updates.

Stay Informed on Weather Updates

While you won't be able to turn off the light and water supply of a hotel, you may be able to at a bed and breakfast. Doing so in the midst of a storm can help ensure your safety.

Turn Off Lights and Water

Staying ready allows you to evacuate ahead of time and increases chances of reaching safety. Once you're asked to exit the area, do so quickly.
