2024 Lagos Detty December Bucket List for First-Timers

By leah jones

“Detty December (DD)" is a time of intense end of the year celebrations marked by parties, concerts, festivals and cultural events. It's most popular in the countries of Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa.

The origins of DD are debated but it became widely popular after the 2019 Year of Return initiative in Ghana marking the 400th anniversary of the first known enslaved Africans’ arrival in Virginia.

The goal of the Year of Return campaign was to encourage African Americans and others a part of the African diaspora to reconnect with the Motherland through activities and celebrations in Ghana.

The initiative was very successful, attracting tens of thousands to the country that year and, subsequently, more people to the DD celebrations around Africa.

Five years later, DD is anticipated and attended in major cities like Lagos and Accra by locals and visiting diaspora members locally coined “I Just Got Backs (IJGBs)” alike.

Lagos, Nigeria is known to have something for everyone, whether you want to party all night (and into the day) or you want to sight see and learn more about the culture.
