Beyond Tokyo: Explore Japan by Train

When trying to escape the stress of everyday life, it's easy enough to get lost in daydreaming about the adventures awaiting you – especially those you can travel by train. 

Japan has one of the best systems in the world. The Shinjuku bullet train is renowned and an excellent way to traverse the country in an instant.

There is also a case to be made for a leisurely trip. Alternative, slower train lines like the JR Azusa lets travelers appreciate the journey along with their destination. Check out these day trips from Tokyo by train.

The moment you step off the train, the first reaction is having your breath taken away by the blossoming plum trees. Make sure to inhale the heady aroma of plum fruit. Then head to one of the many tea houses for a cup of matcha.

Travel time to Izu is around three hours which stretches the definition of day trip. Taking a dip at the beach or the hot springs melts away the real world. Enjoy the local seafood along with UNESCO World Heritage locales that evoke traditional Japan.

Towering at 12,400 feet, this active volcano is one of Japan's most iconic wonders. Hiking and climbing opportunities abound. Amateur photographers have access to panoramic vistas. Adrenaline junkies can go paragliding.

The Japanese cherish the country's history and its natural beauty. This is best represented in Nikko. It's home to the Tōshō-gū Shinto shrine which dates to the Tokugawa Shogunate circa the 1600s. Stay for the verdant forests and roaring waterfalls.

It seems like one can't wander Japan without running into blossoming trees of some sort. The cherry trees of Kawazu imbue the area with a magical aura. From late February to early March, tourists are struck with awe.
