In Full Bloom: The Magic of Cherry Blossom Season

By Emma Hynes

Cherry blossom season refers to the time when cherry trees (especially the Japanese cherry, or Sakura) bloom, covering branches in delicate pink and white flowers.

It's a highly anticipated event in many parts of the world, especially in Japan, where it holds deep cultural significance.

In Japan, cherry blossoms symbolize the fleeting nature of life (because the blossoms only last for about one to two weeks).

The tradition of Hanami (flower viewing) involves gathering under cherry blossom trees with friends and family to enjoy food, drinks and the beautiful scenery.

Tokyo is an important place for cherry blossom season because it serves as a major cultural and historical hub for the tradition of Hanami.

Tokyo

Tokyo’s cherry blossom season typically peaks from late March to early April, transforming the city into a sea of soft pink and white blooms.

Popular spots like Ueno Park, Chidorigafuchi and the Meguro River attract thousands of visitors who gather for Hanami picnics under the trees.

The city comes alive with sakura-themed food, drinks and nighttime illuminations, creating a magical atmosphere.

Beyond Tokyo, there are many other notable places to experience cherry blossom season. Kyoto is famous for its historic charm, with blossoms framing iconic sites like the Philosopher’s Path and Maruyama Park.
