If a trip to Cuba is on your bucket list, but you have some reservations due to safety concerns, there’s some good news for travelers. Officials from the United States Bureau of Consular Affairs have decreased the travel warning to Cuba from a Level 3 to Level 2.

The U.S. issues travel advisories ranked on a scale from 1 to 4.  Level 4 is the highest travel advisory which warns citizens to do not travel, while Level 1 advises people to exercise normal precautions.

The drop to a Level 2 warning in Cuba means that U.S. citizens should exercise increased caution. To put that in perspective, this travel advisory is equivalent to the current travel advisories for Indonesia and Germany.

A year ago, the U.S. government’s tone was different for people considering travel to Cuba following what The State Department believed to be an attack on US Embassy employees and their families in Havana.

During the time of the previous travel advisory,  there were allegedly a series of targeted attacks that caused them to suffer hearing loss, dizziness, cognitive issues and fatigue. Attacks were said to have occurred in U.S. diplomatic residences, including a long-term apartment at the Atlantic, Hotel Nacional, and Hotel Capri in Havana.

A Level 2 Exercise Increased Caution means that you should be aware of heightened risks to safety and security.

Have a contingency plan for emergency situations.
