Traveler Of The Week: Tai Makes The Most Of Study Abroad
Travel Noire has always been devoted to showcasing black travelers that inspire others to see more of the world. Tai shares how being a student abroad has helped her learn to be free.
Travel Noire: Where are you originally from and where do you currently live?
Tai: I am from Houston, Texas!! I currently live in London, England right now for University.
Travel Noire: When did traveling become more than a hobby for you?
Tai: I’ve been traveling my entire life honestly! It became more of a hobby when I began taking international trips in high school. I just completely fell in love with the adventures.
Travel Noire: What are your favorite domestic destinations to visit?
Tai: My fave domestic destination is H-town of course, gotta rep my city! Seattle would be my second because the whole hipster vibe makes me feel right at home. The last domestic destination that is my fave would have to be Puerto Rico. I love everything about the culture and the energy I feel there.
Travel Noire: What are your favorite destinations to travel abroad?
Tai: Oh this is easy…Amsterdam would be my first! I really like the vibe in the city honestly. Everyone is super chill, open, and free. It is right up my alley. My second fave destination would have to be St. Marteen.
Travel Noire: What are your top three travel secrets that black travelers should know?
Tai: 1). Yes when you go to places, people will stare at you because you are black. That means you have to exude confidence at ALL TIMES. You belong where ever you travel, don’t let anyone make you feel otherwise.
2). Please make sure you bring enough hair products. I’ve made this mistake before and I know for sure in Europe finding your desired product is either extremely difficult or expensive.
3). You can be on a budget and still travel!! I’m a student right now and I am still hopping from place to place every chance I get. Stack those McDonald’s and shopping coins to the side for traveling. I promise it’s worth it.
Travel Noire: How did traveling change your perspective on life?
Tai: As I’ve traveled I’ve picked up languages, cultures, and knowledge. I guess it’s changed my perspective in the sense that I know I can live anywhere and do literally anything! I feel unstoppable and more connected to my fellow humans each time I hit a new destination.
Travel Noire: What’s one item that you always have in your carry-on?
Tai: Lotion. That watered down mess in hotels is NOT it. That and sanitizing wipes.
